A Legacy of Love – Who Was G. Douglas Young?

In 1964, Dr. G. Douglas Young moved to Israel with his wife Georgina (Snook) and established an educational organization, at the same time beginning the work that later became known as Bridges for Peace. Their lives were a witness to the God they served. Everyone knew them as people who lived a life of love, as they fulfilled the commands of Jesus to love God and to love your neighbor.

In 1967, the Youngs and their students proved their love for the Jewish people during the Six Day War. "Dr. Young had to dodge a few shells as a reserve ambulance driver?Snook hosted 60 neighbors in the basement bomb shelter at the school's location on the Street of the Prophets [just a few blocks from the present location of Bridges for Peace] ?Students served sandwiches to Israeli troops garrisoned outside while others filled sandbags for the hospital next door." Israelis were shocked to discover that these Gentile Christians stayed with them through the entire war. "What? Are you still here?" they would ask (From the book, Gentile with a Heart of a Jew ).

Dr. Young was an incredible communicator, whether in Jerusalem's daily newspaper, on radio or television interviews, in churches or universities, or in headlines around the world. This ardent Christian Zionist – well acquainted with Israel's leaders and having first-hand knowledge of Israel's situation – had a passion to get the "good" word out about Israel. Thus, in 1976, the Dispatch from Jerusalem was born, which became the venue through which Bridges for Peace was launched.

Since we owe so much historically to the Jewish people, do you have an attitude comparable to that of Paul toward them? If you have that attitude, is it more than merely an attitude? In what concrete way are you seeking to express it? Are you helping them in your community? Are you helping the new nation of Israel? Are you helping them in material and physical ways? Are you expressing real friendship always? Are you accepting them much in the same way as the Christian church has done down through the centuries? Just as surely as they need to understand real Christianity, so, too, do the Gentiles need to understand them. Are you working for a better, mutual understanding, and an interchange of ideas, hopes, and aspirations? – G. Douglas Young
